If you're applying for Canada PR or planning to study in a French-speaking university, you’ll need to prove your French language skills. The two main exams accepted by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) are TEF (Test d’Évaluation de Français) and TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français).
Both tests assess listening, reading, writing, and speaking, but they have different formats, scoring, and uses. TEF is often required for Express Entry and Quebec immigration, while TCF is commonly used for university admissions and some residency applications.
We will compare TEF vs. TCF, explain how they work, and help you decide which one fits your needs best.
TEF vs. TCF: Differences
If you need a French language test for Canada PR or study, the two main options are TEF and TCF. Both are accepted by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) but differ in format, requirements, and processing time.
TEF is the preferred test for Express Entry and Quebec immigration, while TCF is often used for study applications and some PR programs. The structure also varies—TEF requires all four sections, whereas TCF allows some flexibility.

Which Exam is Right for You?
For Canada PR, TEF is the better choice, especially for Express Entry and Quebec programs.
For university admissions, TCF is more commonly accepted.
If you want more flexibility, TEF covers both PR and study applications, making it the more versatile option.

TEF vs. TCF: Scoring & CLB Equivalency
Both TEF and TCF scores are converted into Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, which determine your language points for Express Entry and other PR programs. The higher your CLB level, the more Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points you get.
TEF uses a point-based system (0-699 for listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
TCF uses a different scale, with listening and reading scored between 0-699, and speaking and writing between 0-20.
TEF is considered slightly harder, as the listening and reading sections have more complex questions.
TCF is more flexible, but PR applicants who skip writing and speaking may get a lower CLB score.
Costs of TEF vs. TCF in Different Countries
The cost of TEF and TCF varies by country, test center, and exam type. Generally, TEF is slightly more expensive than TCF because it is mandatory for Quebec immigration and widely used for PR applications.
While fees change based on location, here’s a general cost breakdown:

Higher demand for TEF due to PR applications
TEF is usually more expensive because all four sections are mandatory for PR.
TCF costs less in some regions because writing and speaking are optional for PR applicants.
Some test centers charge additional fees for late registrations or rescheduling.
If cost is a factor, TCF may be the better choice for those only taking it for study purposes. However, for Canada PR, TEF remains the best option despite the higher price.
Which Exam is Easier? TEF or TCF?
Many test-takers wonder which exam is easier to pass. While both TEF and TCF test the same language skills, the difficulty level depends on:
1. Exam Structure & Question Type
TEF is structured and requires all four sections – listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
TCF is more flexible, as writing and speaking are optional for PR applications.

TEF is preferred by PR applicants because it provides a complete CLB score (no risk of missing sections).
TCF is preferred by students as universities often accept it for admissions.
Test duration – TEF takes longer but is more structured, while TCF allows flexibility.

Finding an exam center for TEF or TCF depends on where you live. Both tests are offered in multiple countries, but availability varies by region. In India, Alliance Française centers conduct both exams, but TEF slots fill up faster due to PR demand.

How to Choose Between TEF and TCF for Your Application?
Choosing TEF vs. TCF depends on why you are taking the test—Canada PR, Quebec immigration, or university admission.
If You Are Applying for Express Entry PR
TEF is the better choice for Express Entry because:
It guarantees a full CLB score (all four sections are mandatory).
It is widely recognized by IRCC for PR applications.
TCF can be used for PR, but writing and speaking are optional, which may result in a lower CLB score if skipped.
Best choice for Express Entry: TEF (higher CRS points, ensures complete language proof).
