Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the OET?

The OET is designed to assess the English language proficiency of healthcare professionals who want to work or study in an English-speaking country. It focuses on real-life medical scenarios to ensure candidates can communicate effectively in a healthcare setting.

How is the OET different from IELTS?

Unlike IELTS, which is a general English test, the OET is specifically for healthcare professionals. The OET uses medical terminology and real-world scenarios, making it more relevant for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers.

Can I take the OET online from home?

Yes, OET offers a home-based version called OET@Home, which allows candidates to take the test remotely on a computer. However, not all regulatory bodies accept this format, so check with your desired institution before choosing this option.

Is there a limit on how many times I can take the OET?

No, there is no limit to the number of times you can take the OET. You can retake the test as many times as needed to achieve your target score, but it is recommended to prepare well before attempting again.

Do OET result expire?

Yes, most institutions accept OET results for two years from the test date. However, some healthcare boards or employers may have different validity requirements, so it’s best to check with them directly.

Can I improve my OET result without retaking the test?

If you feel that your score does not reflect your performance, you can apply for a re-marking. However, if your score is significantly lower than the required grade, it is best to prepare thoroughly and retake the test. Regular practice and targeted study can help improve your results.

What happens if I fail one section of the OET?

If you fail one section, you may need to retake the entire test or check if your institution accepts "score clubbing." Score clubbing allows you to combine your highest scores from multiple attempts, but this depends on the policies of the specific healthcare board.

Can I request a re-evaluation of my OET result?

Yes, if you believe your scores are not accurate, you can request a re-marking of one or more sections. This request must be submitted within 72 hours of receiving your results. There is a fee for each section you want reviewed, and the final decision will be communicated after the evaluation.

What is the passing score for OET?

The passing score depends on the requirements of the institution or country where you are applying. Most healthcare boards require a minimum of 350 (Grade B) in all four sections. However, some institutions may accept a C+ (300–340) in the Writing section.

What should I do if I lose my OET result certificate?

If you lose your Statement of Results, you can easily download a new copy from your OET account. OET does not provide physical copies, so it is recommended to keep a digital version saved for future reference.
